STUDIO NEWS: ‘Liewe Land II’ at KKNK 2022 - virtual exhibition

A second iteration of the Fiëstas Award winning group exhibition curated by Dineke van der Walt was recently shown at the 2022 KKNK festival in Oudtshoorn.

Van der Walt invited contemporary artists to engage with curio prints of South African landscapes found in the Voortrekker Monument art store room.

In my installation on show, the juxtaposing of pictorial and ideological constructions and religious and cultural fallacies that governed early 20th Century depictions of the South African landscape force together the colonial, postcolonial and decolonial discourses that frame our present understanding of land and ownership.

Participating artists include: Alexa Pienaar, Ana Pather, Annemi Conradie, Barbara Wildenboer, Diane Victor, Gordon Froud, Jaco van Schalkwyk, Jan Maanda Tshikhuthula, Kutlo Mabua, Landi Raubenheimer, Leah Hawker, Lebogang Mogul Mabusela, Mbongeni Fakudze, Mbongeni Mhlongo, Olwethu de Vos, Pat Matlau, Percy Maimela, Phumlani Ntuli, Sandile Radebe,  and Zolile Phetshane.
